Explore the river bottoms and wide open meadows within Yellowstone’s grand wilderness. These areas teem with wildlife, who leave evidence of their presence. Moose tracks, bear scat, and wild edibles (huckleberries, anyone?) abound. This hike is ideal for people who want to explore at a leisurely pace and take in the sights and experience.

Have you ever wondered why this area is called ‘Big Sky Country’? See for yourself in this adventure! Explore the wide open spaces, in fields of wildflowers and fresh sagebrush. Hike up to higher elevations to get a sprawling view of Yellowstone’s backcountry and search for wildlife. This hike is ideal for people who want to explore and add a little more challenge.

◆   Summit Climbs

Feeling energetic and adventurous? Want a bird’s-eye-view of Yellowstone’s backcountry? This is the adventure for you! You may climb 2,000 - 4,000 feet in this hike, and cover 3-6 miles for the half day and 6-12 miles for the full day adventure. Summit a peak and see the sprawling wilderness beyond (and maybe some big wildlife!). This hike is ideal for people who want a more advanced and rigorous adventure.

Which adventure should you choose?

Your guide will work with you to determine which adventure is best for you. Together, you will decide what you want to see, how far you want to go, and how challenging you would like your adventure to be.  Learn about wildlife habitats, forest and grassland ecology, how winter snowpack and meandering rivers in Yellowstone impact everyone downstream from Montana to Louisiana.

Morning or Afternoon

• Expect to hike 3 - 6 miles
• Adventures last ~4 hours
• Wear sturdy shoes

• Weather can change quickly, be prepared for rain showers and thunderstorms 
• Choose from: ​Morning 8am - 12pm, Afternoon 1 - 5pm, Twilight 5 - 9pm

Full Day

• Expect to hike 6 - 12 miles
• Adventures last ~8 hours
• Wear sturdy shoes
• ​Bring a day pack, water, and layers
• Lunch is included
• Weather can change quickly, be prepared for rain showers and thunderstorms
• Hikes depart at 8am and return ~4pm

Our Guide-Your Car

Follow our guide in your car to the trailhead for a more economical way to experience Yellowstone. Immerse yourself in the wilds of Yellowstone with a climb to the top of a peak, a hike through the meadows, or a stroll along the river bottoms. The day is yours to plan with your guide for a half day (4 hour) adventure or a full day (7-9 hour) adventure. The Step-On Guide will provide trekking poles and binoculars for the group.​

Yellowstone Hiker Package

 Want to experience wild and remote Yellowstone? Want to summit a peak?  Want to do a little green bathing? You determine the pace and distance. Hike into Yellowstone's wild places along streams, through meadows  and forests of the seldom visited northwest corner backcountry.  Your guide will lead you onto trails less traveled. Enjoy 2 half day adventures, plus 1 full day adventure on this package.

• Day 1: Half day Into the Wilds Adventure River Walk
• Day 2: Half day Into the Wilds Adventure Meadow Hike

Package price  includes three naturalist-guided adventures, transportation from your door in Big Sky or West Yellowstone, gourmet adventure-ready picnic lunch (full day only), and YNP entrance and user fees.
