COURSE DESCRIPTION: Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA) certified course offered by Crested Butte Outdoors This course requires 30+ hours of self-directed pre-course review prior to 40+ hours of in-person learning over the course of five days. The 5-Day WFR is best suited for students with previous medical backgrounds (EMR or higher) or those who have completed a WFR course in the past. Students are provided an electronic or physical textbook and downloadable study guide to review the curriculum and are expected to come to class ready to engage in drills and skill practice. Students must register at least four to two weeks before the in-person course date to receive the textbook and download the PDF study guide and adequately complete the pre-course review. Students are encouraged to register and begin pre-course review in advance of the required deadlines. All students must complete all pre-course work prior to arrival on course.
Prior to enrolling in a course, please review our Functional Position Description. The criteria set forth in this document allows students to self-assess their ability to meet the demands of both a WMAI course as well as the demands of a certified wilderness medical provider in the field.
COURSE FEES Cost is $1,000 per enrollee, which includes pre-coursework, textbooks, and study guides. The class is capped at 14 participants. Deadline for registration is April 11, no exceptions.
YOUR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Classroom time will be held in a spacious, heated and plumbed warehouse. Please bring a camping chair or something that you will be comfortable sitting in during lectures. We also recommend you bring a clipboard, notebook, and pens/pencils for note-taking.
Weather in Montana is unpredictable! In April, it could be 0°F or it could be 60°F. Scenarios will be held outside in all conditions: rain, shine, or snow. For Outdoor Scenarios, we will provide snowshoes, poles, and transportation to-and-from the Scenario locations. Scenarios will take place in community parks and Yellowstone National Park. We will provide you with a packing list.
We are in Grizzly Bear Country! You are required to have bear spray with you when we are in Outdoor Scenarios. We require all participants to strictly adhere to Leave No Trace Ethics.
FOOD & LODGING You are responsible for your own food and lodging. Big Sky has three grocery stores and several restaurants. You are welcome to use the refrigerator in the warehouse. There are no cooking facilities, but you are welcome to use your own camp cooking equipment outdoors.
Big Sky is a resort community, with several hotel, Airbnb, VRBO, and Forest Service camping options. You provide your own camping gear. Other options may be available, inquire with Big Sky Adventures & Tours.
Meet Your Instructor Sue Purvis Crested Butte Outdoors International Wilderness Medical Associates International
This course is offered in person over three days for a total of 24-30 hours of class time. You must have a current, valid certification.
The WFR Recertification course is designed to re-certify and refresh current Wilderness First Responders. WMA International invites eligible WFR graduates from other wilderness medical schools to re-certify with us. Students will review essential skills and wilderness protocols and will discuss relevant updates in wilderness medicine. The course focuses heavily on hands-on learning through patient assessment drills and guided discussion. Upon successful completion, students will receive a Wilderness First Responder certification as well as a CPR certification equivalent to the American Heart Association's BLS CPR standard. These certifications remain valid for three years.
Note: WMA WEMS graduates with a current EMS license may also re-certify the wilderness portion of their WEMS certification with this course.
